A Zen garden is a meditation tool which is also fun and decorative.
The word "ZEN" comes from the Japanese term "Zazen", which means literally, "sit down and concentrate". Zen Gardens are a useful tool for those of us that may not be able to do that so easily on our own. When daily thoughts or troubles seem to plague our minds, and all we need is a moment of tranquility to calm our nerves and enjoy some peace, we can pick up the rake and let the simple act of creating swirls in sand, and rearraging rocks free our minds to a restful state.
The sand represents water, while the stones represent mountains.
Impermanence is a word you hear a lot in Zen philosophy, and a Zen garden is an excellent example of that. Zen teaches us that nothing lasts forever. Everything changes.
